A slab you will live on for decades either leaks heat forever or holds it. The difference is decided on pour day, and it is the cheapest it will ever be right then.

The insulation goes in with the pour.

The concrete side of the business covers what a foundation crew should: the slabs themselves, the footings, the finishing. The insulated side is where the difference shows. Edge insulation and under-slab systems built into the pour, not retrofitted around it.

Insulating at pour time costs a fraction of chasing warmth later, and on a new build it is the difference between a floor you avoid in winter and one the house is heated through.

The insulated version of a foundation costs the least it will ever cost on the morning of the pour, and nothing after that morning can add it.

Insulation gets left to the next trade.

Concrete holds whatever temperature the ground feeds it. An uninsulated slab couples the house to the winter ground and works against every heater in the building for as long as the house stands, and there is no retrofit: the edge detail and the under-slab layer live inside the pour. The second half of the problem is timing. Insulation, heating coils, mesh and concrete all have to land in one window, and when four companies own four slices of it, whoever turns up late decides what the slab ends up being.
